The Fannin County 4-H program has welcomed Rachel Wasserman as the new AmeriCorps member for the county.
Wasserman is a native of Dahlonega, Georgia, and is excited to be back in Northeast Georgia. She is an alumni of Lumpkin County 4-H, where she competed in project achievement, poultry judging and went on to serve as a camp counselor to the Georgia 4-H summer camp program.
She received her undergraduate degree from Rollins College, located in Winter Park, Florida, last year. There, she double majored in Philosophy and Communication Studies, focusing on public relations for non-profits. She has worked with organizations serving populations ranging from pre-school to the college level.
Georgia 4-H AmeriCorps State program and the Fannin County Board of Education are providing funding for this position, and 4-H AmeriCorps members provide direct services to youth to support the Georgia 4-H mission of assisting youth in acquiring knowledge, developing life skills and forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive members of society.
Through hands-on learning that encourages critical thinking and problem solving, 4-H’ers develop valuable life and career readiness skills that will help them thrive today and for a lifetime. With 4-H, there is truly something for everyone. Upcoming highlights for this 4-H year include project achievement and summer camp at Rock Eagle 4-H Center.
These opportunities are available for Cloverleaf (fourth through sixth grades), Junior (seventh through eighth grades) and Senior (ninth through twelfth grades) 4-H’ers.
“The 4-H program is already off to an incredible start with the Fannin County Youth Fair in September, where 4-H’ers exhibited goats, chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs,” University of Georgia (UGA) Cooperative Extension Administrative Assistant for Fannin County Kayla Robertson said. “4-H is also conducting in-school meetings at all Fannin County elementary schools for 4th and 5th grades. Each class will have one 4-H meeting a month with the opportunity to elect their own 4-H class officers, and every meeting is accompanied with a lesson and activity that is aligned with grade level standards.”
