Students head back to school in Polk County Monday, August 10, putting buses and young drivers back on the roads.
With the start of school comes a warning to be cautious, and also a reminder that those violating the law will be punished.
Sheriff Steve Ross encourages all drivers “to please acknowledge that the buses will be running and for the safety of our kids please slow down not just in the school zones, but at bus route times throughout the county.
“It would be a lot better to be a few minutes late than to destroy a young person’s life.”
Ross also reminded drivers that the new school zone lights have been installed and are working on Highway 68 at the entrance to Copper Basin High School and elementary school.
“Our deputies will be out enforcing the speed limit. There is no excuse now for anyone to be speeding through the zone,” Ross said.
The sheriff also said, “We are so glad that we were able to finally get these installed. We will not know it for sure, but they will probably save a life, and that makes them worth it.”
The school zone is activated between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the beginning and end of the school day.
