Fannin County High School has officially set tentative dates for the 2021 Prom and Graduation Ceremony.
At the request of interim Principal Debbie Decubellis, the Fannin County Board of Education approved, during a meeting Thursday, February 11, for graduation to be held Friday, May 21, in the high school’s football stadium at 8 p.m.
“We would, of course, hope that we could do a traditional graduation, but we also understand that we would have to be in compliance with whatever governor’s order is in compliance at that time,” Decubellis said. “We are also fully prepared to do the same as last year if needed. As an administrative team, we want to make sure that we offer that opportunity to all of our graduates.”
Prom is being planned for Saturday, April 17, at INOLA from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
All students and guests will submit a breathalyzer from the Fannin County Sheriff’s Department.
“We understand that this may or may not get to happen, but it can’t happen if we don’t plan,” Decubellis said. “We are trying to move forward. We have the location secured, we have plans in place, we are, at this point, in compliance with the governor’s order. It would be held in the outside tent so we could keep the sides up as appropriate.
“Students would have to wear a mask. We’re looking at a masquerade-type prom trying to make it cool to wear the mask, but we believe this would be in the best interest of our students as we would have seniors, if not allowed to hold the prom, who would not have the opportunity to attend a junior/senior prom.”
The Board of Education also selected a 2021-2022 School Calendar during their meeting, which includes an August 2 start date for students.
The calendar also includes two 90-day semesters, 10 professional days for teachers, a break September 27 through October 1, a Thanksgiving Break November 22 through November 26, a Christmas Break December 20 through January 4, a break February 17 and 18, a break March 14 through March 18, a Spring Break April 11 through April 15 and a break May 30 and 31.
In a survey sent out to system employees, 68.8% of those surveyed selected this calendar option.
