Courthouse closes after COVID-19 symptoms surface

The Fannin County Courthouse closed Wednesday, July 8, and re-opened Monday, July 13, after cleaning and sanitation due to multiple employees within exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.

Originally, only courts on the second floor of the courthouse closed Tuesday, July 7, after Chief Superior Court Judge Brenda Weaver amended her third order extending the declaration of judicial emergency to include a mandated closure and deep cleaning of all judicial offices because “the public’s safety is of utmost concern to this court.”

According to Weaver, multiple employees on the second floor had exhibited symptoms and were being tested for the virus.

The order also closed judicial offices in Gilmer County as well.

The rest of the Fannin County Courthouse was closed entirely the following day.

These closures took place after Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia, Justice Harold Melton, warned judges, Monday, July 6, to not continue to ignore public health guidelines regarding COVID-19 or those who fail to abide by his emergency declarations could face discipline by the state’s judicial watchdog.
