Constitution Week proclaimed by Fannin commissioners

The Fannin County Board of Commissioners have proclaimed the week of September 17 through the 23 as Constitution Week and Thursday, September 17, as Constitution Day at the request of the The Old Unicoi Trail Chapter of National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

In signing the proclamation, Chairman Stan Helton said, “The Constitution of the United States of America, the guardian of our liberties, embodies the principles of limited government in a republic dedicated to rule by law. … The Old Unicoi Trail Chapter of National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is a leader in local efforts to emphasize citizen responsibility for protecting and defending the constitution, persevering it for posterity to inform the people that the constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life and to encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the constitution in September of 1787.”

This week is Constitution Week across the United States, and the Old Unicoi Trail Chapter encourages young readers and older readers alike to check out different books on the U.S. Constitution.

The books include: A More Perfect Union by Betsy Maestro (HarperCollins); Shh! We’re Writing the Constitution by Jean Fritz (Puffin); the Bill of Rights by Syl Sobel J.D (Barrons); We the Kids by David Catrow (Puffin); We the People by Lynne Cheney (Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books); IF YOU Were There When They Signed the Constitution (Elizabeth Levy (Scholastic); and, IF YOU Lived at the Time of the American Revolution by Kay Moore (Scholastic).

Old Unicoi Trail Chapter Regent Pam Matthews said, “The Constitution of the United States of American is a living document that assures each citizen the liberties not just cherished by Americans but envied around the world. Members of Old Unicoi Trail Chapter strive to keep our ancestors’ legacy alive by promoting the ideals for which they forfeited their lives and fortunes to give their descendants. We encourage adults and children alike to learn more about our Nation’s governing document. We all need to better understand the document to realize its impact on our daily lives.”
