Children learn about “Backyard Birds” at Fannin Public Library

By Bobbi Pippin

Several children gathered for Fannin County Public  Library’s “Backyard Birds” on Saturday, March 9th. The library had loads of fun activities for kids of all ages to do while learning about birds.

There were life-sized cutouts of birds up on a wall along with QR codes so that kids may compare their wing span to the birds, read about that type of bird, and listen to what sound it makes.

There was another activity where kids were able to use various tools similar to a bird’s beak like chopsticks, clothespins, and tongs to attempt to pick up fake bugs and berries.

One activity allowed the kids to create their own bird net using items like straw, sticks, and strings. The library provided paper plates so that the kids were able to take home their very own homemade bird’s nest.

There were multiple matching games such as matching bird silhouettes to the bird as well as a memory game with different types of birds.

One of the kid favorites was a table with lots of different bird feathers on it as well as magnifying glasses.  There was also a chart on the table to show the different parts of the a bird’s feather. The kids loved looking at each of the different feathers.

During the event, the library also had a live feed going where kids were able to watch birds frolic around in real time. They laughed at how the birds jump around.

All of the children that came to the event were so excited to do all of the activities the library set up for them while also learning all about birds.
