State Representative Johnny Chastain got his wish last week when he was named to a House of Representatives Study Committee on Navigable Streams and Related Matters.
House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newton) named Chastain (R-Blue Ridge) as one of seven committee members. Among the others is Stan Gunter (R-Blairsville).
Chastain said in March he was hoping to be placed on the new committee following the passage of House Bill (HB) 1172.
At the time, Chastain said he was particularly pleased that nothing in that bill could be construed to, “Permit entry upon privately owned land adjacent to navigable streams.”
HB 1175 was signed by Governor Biran Kemp in May and became law July 1.
The new study committee was established following the adoption of House Resolution 1554 during the 2024 legislative session. It will examine aspects of navigable streams in Georgia and the issues surrounding their ownership, private and public rights of use and other related matters, and may make recommendations for proposed legislation ahead of the 2025 legislative session.
Hearing of his appointment last week, Chastain said, “This issue of navigable streams is extremely important to my constituents in North Georgia. House District 7 is blessed with abundant natural resources, including lakes and streams, that are enjoyed by both residents and tourists, and, therefore, I have a vested interest in this subject matter.”
Chastain said the goal of the committee is to find legislative solutions that will satisfy both private property owners and outdoor enthusiasts.
Chastain represents District 7, which includes Fannin, Gilmer and a portion of Dawson counties.
