Raymond Vandiver Akins is now in U.S. government custody after his indictment by a grand jury in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.
Akins was picked up from the Fannin County Jail January 29 by federal authorities to be taken to a different facility, according to jail records.
Akins’ transfer came after he was indicted by the federal grand jury in Gainesville January 23.
Three counts are listed in the indictment that include:
•Possession of any firearm by a convicted felon and that possession affecting interstate and foreign commerce;
•Possessing with intent to distribute at least 500 grams of methamphetamine; and,
•Possession of a firearm in the furtherance of drug trafficking.
A Forfeiture Provision is also included in the indictment that seeks all of Akins’ property and cash associated with the charges in the indictment.
Akins, 66, was arrested November 8, 2023, after law enforcement officers from five agencies confiscated nearly 35 pounds of methamphetamine, two pounds of marijuana, 45 firearms $8,878 in cash, and various drug paraphernalia from Akins’ residence at 2454 Dry Pond Road.
According to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation conversion table, the value of the methamphetamine was placed at $5,033,600 when broken down to sales of a single dose.
After being taken into custody at the scene, Akins was charged with Felony, Trafficking in Methamphetamine or Amphetamine; Commission of a Crime by a Convicted Felon; Possession With Intent to Distribute; 45 counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon; and a misdemeanor charge of Possession of Drug Related Objects.
Taking part in the arrest were Fannin County and Gilmer County sheriff’s deputies, and agents of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation Conasauga Safe Streets Task Force, and the Department of Community Supervision (probation).
