Bond: Carlton remained in the Fannin jail Friday
Almost a year after an exchange of gunfire, and his subsequent indictment by a Fannin County Grand Jury, George Wade Carlton has been granted bond conditions.
At the conclusion of a hearing earlier this month, Superior Court Judge Mary Beth Priest granted Carlton a bond in the amount of $50,000 with 10 bond conditions attached.
Those conditions include that he is not to threaten or endanger any person or property, violate any laws, possess any firearms or be in a residence or vehicle where firearms are present, consume any alcohol, and submit to a mental health evaluation.
District Attorney Frank Wood III said his office opposed bond for Carlton.
Carlton has been in jail with no bond waiting trial on a five-count indictment that includes two counts of Aggravated Assault, one count of Exploitation and Intimidation of Disabled Adult, Elder Person or Resident, one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and one count of Possession of Firearm By Convicted Felon during Crime. He was indicted August 9, 2024.
The charges stemmed from an exchange of gunfire off Victory Ridge Road July 10, 2024.
Carlton is accused of shooting at one person with a rifle and pointing that rifle at another.
At the time, Fannin County Sheriff Dane Kirby said the victim was helping a friend with a small construction project when they heard a gunshot that sounded like it came from right around the corner of the residence, but no shooter was in sight.
The victim, armed with his own 9mm handgun, went around the corner where he saw Carlton, who was about 30 yards away, pointing a .30-.30 rifle at him. The two exchanged words then shot at each other.
Witnesses said the shots sounded like a single shot.
Carlton has remained in custody since being released from a Gainesville hospital.
As of Friday, May 23, he had not been able to make bond.
