Significant construction on Blue Ridge Drive in McCaysville is expected to create longer traffic delays than motorists are already experiencing.
The work will also bring a reduced speed limit.
Police Chief Michael Earley said that crews from CW Matthews Contracting Company have “entered an accelerated phase” of work that includes construction of a roundabout, installation of retaining walls and relocation of water and sewer infrastructure.
Earley explained the plans for the roundabout Thursday afternoon, April 9, as work was in progress to haul dirt for the work.
The roundabout will be located just south of Papa’s Pizza with a huge amount of dirt required for the build up.
Work has also started to build two ten-foot-wide traffic lanes across from Papa’s Pizza on the west side of Blue Ridge drive. Once those are complete and traffic shifted on to them, lanes will be constructed on the opposite side of Blue Ridge Drive. This will take place as the roundabout progresses.
Earley also showed how the roundabout will greatly increase the grade of Blue Ridge Drive into and out of McCaysville.
The rest of the construction will concentrate on Blue Ridge Drive from the area of Pat’s Kuntry Kitchen north into town. Included will be a retaining wall in front of the artist’s studio just south of Hillcrest Drive, several areas of infrastructure relocation, and sidewalk construction.
The speed limit on Blue Ridge Drive is being lowered to 25 miles per hour to ensure the safety of construction workers and motorists alike.
Signs changing the limit were on the way to McCaysville last week, Earley said.
“We ask for your patience, attentiveness, and cooperation as crews work diligently to complete this project safely and efficiently. Please remain alert, follow all posted traffic control signs, and exercise courtesy toward the workers on site,” Earley said.
