Veteran clerk retiring
After dedicating 25 years to the City of McCaysville, Nancy Godfrey now holds the key to the city.
And, with that key, the long-time city clerk is officially letting go of the reins and entering into retirement.
A reception was held in her honor Friday, October 24, at Tooney’s.
To those in attendance, Godfrey thanked them for coming and said, “I love all of you, and I still stand behind a hundred percent that we have the best employees in McCaysville. I’ve always said that, and right now you have a great mayor and council.”
With tears threatening the eyes of many in attendance, Police Chief Michael Earley called Godfrey “a truly remarkable lady, one who has devoted 25 years of her life to the City of McCaysville and the citizens who call it home.”
Earley continued, “For 25 years, Nancy Godfrey has faithfully served our city, ensured that every part of the city operated with integrity, accountability and compassion. Nancy has been a cornerstone of our city’s progress.
“She has got us through challenges, kept us organized through every change and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure that McCaysville continued to grow in the right direction. Through all the projects, budgets and transitions, there’ve been a few, she has been the steady hand that has kept us moving forward.
“During my 11 years here, I have had the honor of working closely with Nancy. Her dedication, professionalism and heart for this city always shined through.”
Earley spoke just before presenting Godfrey the “key to the city.”
