Rebels win first of two games against Coosa

By John Spargo

Fannin County hosted the Coosa Eagles for a region baseball doubleheader Friday, April 8, in Blue Ridge. The Rebels took game one by a score of 3-1, behind a super pitching effort by Jason Pearson. Coosa came back with a win in the second game by a score of 13-3.

Pearson scattered five hits over seven innings to keep the Eagle bats in check, striking out six. The Rebels took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Pearson helped himself with an RBI double, driving in Sawyer Moreland, who had been hit by a pitch.

The Rebels added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Chance Stacy was hit by a pitch with one out. After a flyball out, Landon Norton and Hayden Danner walked to load the bases, and Clay Heaton drew another walk to force in Stacy. Bryson Holloway delivered a single, driving in Norton, to give the Rebels a 3-0 lead.

Coosa finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning on an error, walk , and a single. In the top of the seventh inning, the Eagles led off with a walk, but a double play and a strikeout ended any chance of a comeback, giving Fannin County a huge 3-1 win in game one.

Holloway went 2-4 to lead Fannin’s offense, while Pearson and Jake Kuna went 1-3. Holloway, Pearson, and Heaton each had an RBI for the Rebels.

In game two, Fannin took a 3-2 lead after one inning, starting with a single by Bryson Holloway and another by Jason Pearson. Jake Kuna drove in two runs as he ripped a double to right field. After a walk to Connor Martin, Carson Callihan hit a ball that the Coosa shortstop couldn’t handle, driving in Kuna to give the Rebels a 3-2 lead.

Coosa answered in the top of the second inning, scoring five runs to take a 7-3 lead. They added five more runs in the top of the fourth, on five singles and a walk, to increase their lead to 12-3.

Coosa kept the Rebels bats in check, and after the Eagles added another run in the top of the sixth to make the score 13-3, Fannin had one more chance to get a rally going.  Moreland singled, Stacy walked and Kuna also walked to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the threat and the ballgame.

Kuna and Martin had two hits apiece for Fannin, while Holloway, Moreland, Pearson, Norton, and Heaton each had one hit. Kuna had two RBI’s to lead Fannin County. Jordan Bennett and Martin handled the pitching duties in game two, striking out eight Eagle batters.
