Rebels roll over Murphy 56-30

The Fannin County Rebels football team earned a big 56-30 victory against the Murphy (North Carolina) Bulldogs Friday night at the Fannin County High School stadium.

Bryson Holloway opened the game with a 60-yard kickoff return from the Rebels’ 20 yard line to the Bulldogs’ 20 yard line, but a holding call brought the Rebels back.

The offense took over at the 23 yard line.

Carson Callihan regained the loss with a 60 yard run before Elijah Weaver hit Holloway with a pass covering seven yards. Callihan ran it in for a Fannin County touchdown just a minute into the game. Jack Kantner’s extra point was good, putting Fannin up 7-0.

Kantner’s kickoff soared out of the end zone and the Bulldogs took over at the 20 yard line. Clay Heaton made the Rebels’ first stop of the game, but not before for a Murphy first down. Logan Long stopped the ball carrier, limiting the Bulldogs to a two yard gain. Jeremy Tammen and Nate Maloof made the next hit  before Cooper Born and Cade Sands stopped the ball carrier  for fourth down. The Rebels’ offense took over only 26 yards away from the endzone when the Bulldog’s knee touched the ground and he was ruled down at the 26 yard line.

Weaver completed a 25 yard pass to Corbin Davenport who found himself in the end zone for another Rebel touchdown. With Kantner’s extra point, the score with just over eight minutes left in the first quarter was 14-0.

Kantner’s kick, again, sailed through the end zone and the Bulldogs took over at the 20 yard line. A pass bounced off the hands of a Murphy Bulldog receiver right into the hands of Callihan who scored on a pick six for a Rebel touchdown. Kantner’s extra point was good, putting the Rebels up 21-0.

Heaton and Noah Burnett made the first defensive stop for the Rebels after the kickoff. A false start penalty brought the Bulldogs back five yards. Holloway read a down-field pass and picked off another interception for the Rebels. This put the Rebels at their 20 yard line.
