Rebels earn spot in baseball Sweet 16

The Fannin County Rebels baseball team punched their ticket to the Sweet Sixteen when they won big over the Armuchee Indians 13-2 and 13-0 in a double header Friday, April 25, at home in their first post season playoff game.

During the first game of two, the Rebels got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Colton Gray singled down the left field line, Bristol Hughes reached on catcher’s interference, Casen Bailey grounded out, and Gavin Davis grounded into a fielder’s choice, each scoring one run.

Fannin scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning. Tucker Dockery singled, scoring two runs, and Carson Callihan homered to center field, scoring three runs.

Hughes helped earn the win for the Rebels. The starting pitcher gave up one hit and two runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking seven.

Hudson York tossed two and one-third innings of shutout ball for the Rebels in relief. The reliever gave up zero hits, striking out one and walking none.

Fannin County collected 10 hits in the game. Dockery, Callihan, and Bailey each collected two hits. Elijah Weaver and Callihan were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in three runs. The Rebels didn’t commit a single error in the field. Paul Stroemer Jr. had the most chances in the field with six.

In the second game, the Rebels won 13-0 and got on the board in the top of the first inning after Gray doubled to center field, and York singled down the right field line, each scoring one run.

Fannin extended their early lead with two runs in the top of the second thanks to RBI doubles by Davis and Weaver.

The Rebels added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning on three hits. Callihan singled, scoring one run, and Stroemer Jr. homered to center field, scoring two runs.

Another six runs were added on four hits in the top of the fifth inning. Weaver grounded out, scoring two runs, Callihan singled, scoring one run, and York tripled, scoring three runs.

Mason McDaniel helped earn the win for the Rebels. The starting pitcher gave up two hits and zero runs over four innings, striking out two and walking none.

Bailey pitched one inning of scoreless ball for Fannin in relief. The hurler gave up zero hits, striking out three and walking none.

Fannin County tallied 12 hits in the game. York drove the middle of the lineup, leading the Rebels with four runs batted in. The left fielder went 2-for-4 on the day. Callihan, York, and Bailey each collected two hits. Weaver and Callihan each stole multiple bases. As a team, the Rebels stole seven bases in the game and didn’t commit a single error in the field. Gray had the most chances in the field with six.

The Rebels will continue post season play against Model High School Thursday, May 1.
