Anita Navas nor her family expected she would begin a fight for her life this past Christmas, but that happened and she is still fighting today from a bed at Vanderbilt Hospital Nashville.
Navas is a 13-year-old seventh grader who attends Chilhowee Middle School in Benton, where she was an active member of the softball team.
She became so ill she was placed in a coma. She was diagnosed with Flu B and Strep A, and required high doses of blood pressure medicines.
She has now lost both of her legs, extensive skin grafts are in her future, and her hands and arms are in danger.
“Anita has a very long road ahead of heard,” said Kelley Morgan, who is working to raise money for the family.
Morgan and others have organized the Shamrock Stroll to help the family. Participants can take part in either a mile walk or 5K fun run. For those who don’t want to participate, donations are welcome.
The event will be held Saturday, March 16, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Frank Hammons Memorial Park in Benton.
Registration is $30 for either the walk or run or $20 for a student. Those who sign up before March 6 will receive a t-shirt. Participants are welcome to show up the day of the event.
