Friends and family gathered at the Fannin County High School gym Wednesday, November 11, to watch senior Lady Rebel Becca Ledford further her academic and athletic career. Ledford chose to sign with University of West Georgia.
Ledford helped lead the Lady Rebels to a 23-5 record and 12-0 first place record in Region 7-AA.
As a junior, Ledford averaged 10.1 point per game, 4.5 rebounds per game, 3 assists and 2.5 steals per game. She scored a career high 30 points her junior year and was named the Region 7-AA Player of the Year, and was named to the GHSA AA First Team All-State Team.
Lady Rebels head basketball coach Ryan Chastain said, “We want to thank everyone that has come out to celebrate this, it is an outstanding accomplishment. Not too many people knew how hard she was being recruited. She never put that out in front of her teammates, she always put the team first, and that made it really easy on me as a coach.”
Chastain also spoke on the maturity of Ledford, saying, “The way she has handled this process she has been mature. I think in the end they were six or seven schools that put offers on the table, wanting her to come play at their university and they all said the same things that they love about her, her effort, toughness, hustle and relentlessness. A lot of coaches said, ‘If I could get kids like that (Ledford) on my team, we can handle the rest.’”
Chastain continued, “I have always said this, I am not going to lie for a kid. I am not going to lie when a college calls, but she made it easy when they called and asked ‘What kind of kid is she?’ I said she is a leader, relentless worker, in season and out of season, she never takes a night off, not a practice, not a game, and it made it super easy for us to handle this process for her.”
“I just want her to know how proud I am to be her coach, how proud I am that it got to be me that got to help her go through this and I appreciate you, we love you and we are so proud and happy for you.”
After Ledford signed her national letter of intent, she thanked everyone for coming and said, “I just want to thank everyone for being here, all the support, I want to thank my team, I would not be here without ya’ll.”
Ledford will join the University of West Georgia Lady Wolves next fall.
