The Fannin County Lady Rebels fended off the North Gwinnett Lady Bulldogs basketball team in the first round of the Kelly King Holiday Classic tournament at Lumpkin County High School Tuesday, December 28.
Fannin led from the tip and never slowed down as they topped North Gwinnett 50-42. Courtney Davis, Ellie Cook and Becca Ledford combined for 12 points in the first quarter as Davis netted two, two-point buckets, Cook drained a long-range three ball and converted a free throw, and Ledford muscled in a two-point basket and two free throws.
Reigan O’Neal capped the Lady Rebel scoring with a two-point bucket to give Fannin 14 points in the first. The stout Lady Rebel defense held the North Gwinnett to eight points to lead 14-8.
Fannin continued with their hot hand in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 12-10. Davis rattled off six points in the second on three, two-point baskets.
Ledford added to her total by finding the bottom of the net on two, two-point baskets and Ava Queen worked the paint and converted a two-point basket to give the Lady Rebels a 26-18 lead at halftime.
York had the steady hand for the Lady Rebels in the third quarter, as the senior made three, two-point buckets for six points. Cook drained a three, followed by a two-point bucket, while Ledford netted three points on a two-point basket and a free throw.
North Gwinnett scored 10 points in the third quarter as Fannin increased their lead 40-28.
The Lady Bulldogs tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was too great and the Lady Rebels netted 10 more points. York notched six points on two, two-point buckets and two free throws, while Ledford got a two-point basket to fall. Davis fought to the free throw line, where she converted two free throws to give the Lady Rebels 50 points total in the game.
North Gwinnett scored 14 points in the fourth, but the Fannin were able to withstand the comeback and claim a 50-42 victory over the Lady Bulldogs.
