The Fannin County Lady Rebels kept their perfect region record intact Wednesday, January 19, when they hosted Pepperell’s Lady Dragons.
Fourteen points from Ellie Cook and 13 from Courtney Davis led Fannin to a 57-31 win and a 6-0 record in Region 7AA.
And while the score goes in the record books, the Lady Rebels’ iron curtain defense and rebounding hustle continue to set the tone for their wins.
The opening eight minutes against Pepperell saw Fannin County allow only five points by the visitors, one of those coming from the charity stripe.
The Lady Dragons netted the first two points before Cook ripped a three. After Pepperell tied the game from the free throw line, Davis added two free throws of her own before tossing in a three-pointer to put Fannin ahead 8-3. This started a 10 point run and a 13-3 Fannin lead.
Davis ended the quarter with a pair of free throws, Fannin leading 15-5 at the buzzer.
The teams went almost point-for-point in the second quarter, the Lady Dragons with a 13-11 edge.
Davis and Cook each had four points for Fannin, Ava Queen added two and Jenna Young hit a free throw.
Davis gave the Lady Rebels their biggest lead of the quarter, 10 points, when she stole a pass and drove the length of the court for a layup. At that point, Fannin led 26-16.
The half ended 26-18.
In their usual style, the Lady Rebels dominated the third stanza, outscoring the visitors 16-7 for a 42-25 lead after the first 24 minutes of play.
A balanced scoring attack set the offensive tone with Cook scoring six points, Queen with four, and Becca Ledford and Riley Reeves with three points apiece.
The battle continued in the final quarter as Fannin outscored Pepperell 15-6, but that final did not reflect the Lady Rebels’ advantage.
The Lady Dragons fought back but trailed 42-25 when the clock struck one minute left. Then the visitors scored two points with 59 seconds left and a three as the buzzer sounded.
The Lady Rebels are halfway through their 12-game region schedule.
