Victory: Lady Cougars roll over district competition
The Copper Basin Lady Cougars looked to cap off a great season in District 5A, by capturing the tournament championship, on top of winning the regular season title as well. The Lady Cougars took on Sale Creek, at Sale Creek at Sale Creek High School Saturday, May 11, and never trailed, winning the 5A tournament title, winning 6-1.
Caitlin Pack drove in the first two runs of the day, as she knocked in Samantha Ware and Riley Akens, to give Copper Basin a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
The Lady Cougars tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, after Sale Creek had scored a run, to push the back to two runs, 3-1, when Taylee Hall singled, stole second, and came home on a single by Akens.
The Lady Cougars put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three more runs, to take a 6-1 lead. Taylee Hall singled and Pack was hit by a pitch. Riley Hall drove them home as she ripped a double to make the score 5-1. After back-to-back walks to Alexis Hyatt and Claire Ledford, Maggie Scoggins drove in Pack with a sac fly to make the score 6-1.
Sale Creek couldn’t get anything going on offense in the top of the seventh inning, and the Lady Cougars finished off the season capturing the 5A tournament championship by the score of 6-1.
Pack went 2-3 with three RBI’s and Taylee Hall was 3-3 and scored two runs. Riley Hall was 1-4 and had two RBI’s, while Angela Graves was 1-2. Hyatt and Ledford walked two times apiece and Scoggins walked twice and had an RBI. Ware and Akens both scored a run for the Lady Cougars. Pack went the distance on the mound, going seven innings, striking out three batters.
Head Coach Lindsey Hyatt was very happy with her team’s accomplishment, as well as the entire season. “We played all around great softball this week. Our defense was solid during the tournament, only committing 4 errors over 3 games. Our bats were hot from start to finish. We had 5 players that batted over .500 for the week- Caitlin Pack, Taylee Hall, Claire Ledford, Angie Graves, and Riley Akens. Caitlin Pack pitched the best she has pitched all season during the tournament- striking out 12 and only walking 4. We out scored our opponents 27-4. Everything fell perfectly into place this week and the girls were truly able to showcase their hard work and talent.”

Lady Cougars collect multiple district softball accolades
After winning the 5A regular season softball championship and the tournament as well, the Copper Basin Lady Cougars were well represented on the 5A All-District Team.
As far as the All-Tournament Team, Taylee Hall and Riley Akens were chosen. Akens batted .556 in the tournament with four RBI’s and a double. Hall hit .625 with two RBI’s, scored three runs and had two RBI’s.
Making the All-District Team were: Caitlin Pack, who hit .365 and had four home runs with 19 RBI’s; Angie Graves, who hit .464 with 19 RBI’s and scored 30 runs; Claire Ledford hit .467 with 25 RBI’s, six doubles, two triples, and two home runs; Alexis Hyatt hit .365 with seven doubles, 12 RBI’s and stole 15 bases, to go along with a .939 fielding percentage, and Riley Hall, who was chosen as the District 5A player of the year, as she hit .441, with seven home runs, scored 32 runs, had 28 RBI’s, and stole 19 bases.
