Copper Basin scores 27 runs in doubleheader
Copper Basin’s Lady Cougar softball team hosted CSLA for a doubleheader Friday, April 5, at Copper Basin High School. The Lady Cougars’ bats came alive in both games, bashing 32 hits over the two games and sweeping CSLA 18-9 in game one and 9-1 in the nightcap.
Copper Basin was the visiting team in game one and wasted no time jumping out on top early. Alexis Hyatt doubled home Caitlin Pack for a quick 1-0 lead and Claire Ledford drove Hyatt with an RBI single. Angela Graves drilled a run-scoring double to make the score 3-0 and Riley Akens singled home Graves. Samantha Ware singled home Akens and Maggie Scoggins for a 6-0 lead before CSLA got to the batters box.
After holding CSLA scoreless, Basin erupted for seven more runs in the top of the second inning. Riley Hall hit the first of her two home runs in the game to make the score 9-0 and Ware had a double, scoring Graves and Scoggins. Caitlin Pack finished off the inning with a two-run home run to put the Lady Cougars up 13-0.
The Lady Cougars scored four more runs to end the game in six innings, winning game one 18-9.Copper Basin pounded in 20 hits in the first game, led by Hall, who had a monster ballgame. Hall went 4-4 with two home runs, four RBI’s, scored four runs, a double, and four stolen bases. Graves went 3-3 with two RBI’s and Ware went 3-4 with five RBI’s and a double. Scoggins was 2-3 and scored two runs. Hyatt went 2-4 with an RBI and Pack had a home run and scored two runs. Hyatt and Pack both pitched for Copper Basin, combining for ten strikeouts.
In game two, the Lady Cougars picked up where they left off in game one, collecting 12 more hits. CSLA took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Copper Basin came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. They added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning and three more in the bottom of the fourth inning to open up an 8-1 lead. CSLA never scored again and Copper Basin added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the ballgame and earn a sweep of CSLA to run their district record to 3-0.
Pack went 2-4 in game two with two doubles and an RBI. Hyatt, Graves, and Emily Mundy each went 2-3, while Ledford, Riley Hall, and Ware went 1-3. Pack went the distance in the circle for Copper Basin, going five innings and striking out five, and giving up only three hits.
