Lady Cougars win 5-2 over McMinn Central

Special to The News Observer

The Copper Basin Lady Cougar softball team hosted McMinn Central Monday, March 11, looking to pick up some early season momentum. The Lady Cougars scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the second inning, and got some great pitching and defense to defeat the Lady Chargers 5-2.

After holding Central scoreless through the first two innings, Copper Basin struck first in the bottom of the third inning for five runs. Riley Hall led off the inning with a walk and Alexis Hyatt reached on an error. Claire Ledford ripped an RBI double that scored Hall to put the Lady Cougars up 1-0. Angela Graves followed with a single to center field that brought home Hyatt for a 2-0 Basin lead. With one out, Ledford raced home on a wild pitch to increase the Lady Cougar lead to 3-0 and Caitlin Pack doubled to left field bringing home Graves. Maggie Scoggins came up and delivered a two-out double to bring Pack home to extend the Basin lead to 5-0.

That was all the runs Pack and the Lady Cougars would need, as she scattered seven hits, striking out four batters. The Lady Chargers scored one run in the third and fifth innings, but couldn’t get any more runs across the plate, as the Lady Cougars held on for a 5-2 win.

Ledford went 2-3 with an RBI for the Lady Cougars, while Pack, Scoggins, Hall, Graves, and Riley Akens had one hit apiece for Copper Basin. Pack went seven innings in the circle, giving up seven hits but only allowing the two runs.
