The Copper Basin Lady Cougars basketball team hosted the Lookout Valley Lady Yellow Jackets Tuesday, February 18. The game would be the last regular season home game of the year as the Lady Cougars celebrated seniors Emily Hemming and Hailey Brackett. Both seniors had a great night, with Hemming scoring 15 points and Brackett netting 10. Copper Basin jumped out early and held off the Lady Yellow Jackets for a 55-47 region win.
The Lady Cougars scored 12 points in the first quarter with Riley Smith and Skyler Nipper scoring two, two-point baskets each. Brackett worked the paint for a two-point bucket and two free throws. Copper Basin held Lookout Valley to seven points for a 12-7 lead.
The Lady Cougars kept the offense going in the second quarter, netting 12 points. Sapporiah Ross knocked in two, two-point baskets, while Hemming scored a two-point bucket and two free throws. Brackett and Smith scored a two-point bucket each to cap the first half offense for the Lady Cougars. Copper Basin held the Lady Yellow Jackets to five points in the second for a 24-12 lead at halftime.
The Lady Cougars came out hot in the third, netting 16 points. Nipper scored two, two-point baskets down low, while Higdon drained a long range three ball. Hemming got a two-point basket to fall and converted two free throws, while Brackett fought to the line and converted two free throws as well. Sydney Hickey rattled in a two-point basket and Smith converted a free throw to cap the third quarter scoring for Copper Basin. Lookout Valley was able to score 18 points in the second to trim the Lady Cougars lead 40-30 to start the fourth quarter.
The Lady Yellow Jackets continued to heat up in the fourth, outscoring Copper Basin 17-15. The game was brought within one point, but the Lady Cougars never waivered.
Hemming netted seven points on a two-point bucket and five free throws. Higdon converted three free throws, while Smith converted two and Ross converted one.
Brackett rattled in a two-point bucket in the paint to end the scoring for Copper Basin. The Lady Cougars won the close game 55-47.
