Copper Basin’s Lady Cougar softball team traveled to Hayesville, North Carolina on Monday, April 29 to take on the Lady Yellow Jackets for a doubleheader. The Lady Cougars pounded out 17 hits over both games to gain a sweep, winning the first game 8-2 and following that up with a 12-6 win in game two.
In game one, the Lady Cougars jumped on top 7-0 in the bottom of the first inning, with the big blow coming from Riley Akens, as she ripped a triple, scoring Alexis Hyatt and then scored herself on a throwing error to give Copper Basin a 5-0 lead. After three walks to Claire Ledford, Maggie Scoggins, and Taylee Hall, Caitlin Pack drilled a two-run single to increase the lead to 7-0.
Hayesville scored two runs in the top of the second inning, but the Lady Cougars tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Riley Hall doubled and stole home to make the eventual final score 8-2 in game one.
In the second game, Copper Basin went up 1-0 but Hayesville answered in the bottom of the first inning with two runs to grab the lead, but it didn’t last long as the Lady Cougars scored five runs in the top of the second inning and six more in the top of the third inning to take control of the ballgame. Scoggins had a run-scoring triple, but Riley Hall blew the game open in the second inning with a two-run home run to make the score 6-2.
In the top of the third inning, it was Hall again who did lots of damage, this time with a three-run home run to left field to put Copper Basin ahead 12-2. Hayesville added four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but that was as close as they could get, as Copper Basin completed the sweep with a 12-6 win.
Riley Hall led the way for Basin, going 5-6 with two home runs and five RBI’s over the two games. Pack was 3-6 with two RBI’s, while Akens had two RBI’s as well. Ledford was 3-5 and scored three runs.
Pack pitched all 10 innings of the doubleheader, striking out two batters.
