The Copper Basin Lady Cougars softball team started the 2021 softball season with two wins Monday, March 15, after an impressive double header sweep over the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy (CGLA). The Lady Cougars topped the Lady Mustangs 21-0 in the first game, and 24-2 in the second.
Kaitlyn Goode started at pitcher for Copper Basin in the first game, sitting down nine Lady Mustangs and no hits through three innings. The Lady Cougars also had the bats warmed up, collecting 20 hits. CGLA batted in the top of the first, but the Lady Cougars quickly got off the field with three strikeouts from Goode.
Copper Basin rattled off 16 runs in the bottom of the first, with Riley Smith, Sydney Hickey, Goode, Allie Ballew, Sapporiah Ross, Destiny Pittman and Channing Beach were able to cross home plate two times each. Beach had an impressive in-field home run for one of her two runs. Haley Harper and Bailey Mundy crossed home plate once in the bottom of the first to cap the 16-run inning for Copper Basin.
Goode collected three quick strike-outs in the top of the second to get the Lady Cougars off the field and back on offense. In the bottom of the second inning, Hickey led off and singled to get on base. Hickey was then driven home by Goode, who dinged an in-field home run for two runs. Ross drilled a home run right after Goode for another run to increase the Lady Cougars’ lead 19-0.
Ballew singled to get on base, followed by Jaden Womac reaching on a dropped third strike. Megan Worthy had a nice hit to left field, and later scored with Womac as Brintlie Beach hit a double to center field to give the Lady Cougars a 21-0 lead.
Goode got three consecutive strike-outs in the top of the third as the first game ended 21-0 Copper Basin.
Pittman started in the circle for the Lady Cougars in the second game, pitching three innings and sitting down seven Lady Mustangs.
Copper Basin batted in the top of the first inning, and erupted for nine runs. Smith and Hickey scored twice, while Pittman, Ross, Higdon, Worthy and Mundy crossed home plate once for a 9-0 lead. Hickey was able to score one of those runs on an in-field home run. CGLA batted in the bottom of the first and were able to score two runs to slice the Lady Cougar lead as Copper Basin led 9-2 at the end of the first inning.
Worthy was the lone Lady Cougar to cross home plate in the top of the second inning to give Copper Basin a 10-1 lead after they held the Lady Mustangs scoreless in the bottom of the second.
The game was called in the third inning as the Lady Cougars exploded for 14 runs to get the sweep over the CGLA Lady Mustangs, winning the second game 24-2.
