Lady Cougars never trail in Whitwell win

Copper Basin’s Lady Cougars traveled to Whitwell Friday, January 5, to take on the Lady Tigers in an important out of district matchup. Junior Zoe Green, sophomore Alexis Hyatt, and freshman Kloie Ballew combined for 33 points on the night, as Copper Basin never trailed, winning a big road game 49-40.

Sophomore Kendra Deal drilled a three-pointer and Hyatt scored four points as the Lady Cougars jumped out to an early lead. Green and senior Sarah Collis each hit a two-point bucket as Basin led after the first quarter, 11-7.

Green got red-hot in the second quarter, scoring seven points, while Ballew scored four, including going two-for-two from the free throw line. Freshman Cora Kimsey scored two points for Basin as they took a 24-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The third quarter saw Copper Basin trying to put Whitwell away, but the ballgame stayed close. Green hit two more buckets and Hyatt knocked down a huge three-pointer for the Lady Cougars. Kimsey hit another bucket and Ballew scored two more points as Basin took a slim 35-30 lead into the final quarter.

Hyatt scored six points down the stretch, as she made all four free throw attempts she had. Ballew made two more baskets and Deal knocked down two free throws and scored four points in the final period as the Lady Cougars pulled away for an impressive 49-40 win.

Head Basketball Coach Jeff Grimes was very pleased with his team’s effort, saying, “young teams sometimes have to learn how to win in different ways, including going on a long road trip. I’m very happy how they responded and I thought they elevated their play, which was good in the first half, to another level in the second half and kept their composure late in the game. A good win.”
