Lady Cougars lose to Hiwassee Dam in close game

The Copper Basin Lady Cougars basketball team traveled to Hiwassee Dam Tuesday, January 21, to take on the Lady Eagles.

Copper Basin was looking for the sweep after topping the Lady Eagles Friday, January 17, at home, but Hiwassee Dam did not let that happen as they bested the Lady Cougars 38-31.

Copper Basin scored five points in the first quarter, with Sapporiah Ross sinking a two-point basket and a free throw. Gracie Smith got a two-point basket to fall to cap the first quarter scoring for Copper Basin. The Lady Eagles tallied 10 points in the first to lead 10-5.

The Lady Cougars started to get into a rhythm offensively in the second quarter, as Raegan Higdon scored five points on a three-point bucket and two-point basket. Emily Hemming sank a two-point bucket and a free throw, while Laney Jory scored a three ball. Copper Basin outscored the Lady Eagles 11-10 to cut the lead 18-16 at halftime.

The Lady Cougars came out cold in the third, scoring five points from a long three-point basket from Jory and a two-point bucket from Sydney Hickey. Hiwassee Dam tallied 10 points in the third to lead the game 28-21.

The Lady Cougars tried to come back in the fourth, as Jory and Hemming converted three free throws each. Hailey Brackett and Ross scored a two-point basket each to give Copper Basin 10 points in the fourth. The Lady Eagles scored 10 points as well to hold off the Lady Cougars as they fell 38-31 to Hiwassee Dam.
