The Copper Basin Lady Cougars hosted the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy Mustangs Tuesday, January 28, for a district matchup.
Copper Basin was able to jump out early and hold off the Lady Mustangs for a big 50-26 win.
The Lady Cougars scored 13 points in the first quarter with Skyler Nipper leading the way with seven points on three, two-point baskets and a free throw. Hailey Brackett, Sapporiah Ross and Summer Montgomery scored a two-point basket each, giving the Lady Cougars a 13-5 lead at the end of the first.
The second quarter was much like the first, with the Lady Cougars dominating at both ends of the floor, outscoring the Lady Mustangs 16-5. Brackett scored five points on two, two-point buckets and a free throw, while Sydney Hickey got two, two-point baskets to fall and Raegan Higdon blazed the net on a long range three ball.
Nipper and Ross were able to get a two-point basket each in the paint to give Copper Basin a 29-10 lead at halftime.
The Lady Cougars did not let up in the third, outscoring CGLA 10-4. Nipper was a force in the paint, scoring two, two-point buckets. Lexi Jory, Brackett and Higdon scored a two-point basket each to pad Copper Basin’s lead 39-14 to start the fourth.
The Lady Cougars held off the Lady Mustangs in the fourth, with Brackett scoring four points on two, two-point baskets and Montgomery netting three points on a two-point bucket and a free throw. Higdon and Ross scored a two-point basket each to cap an 11-point fourth quarter as the Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Mustangs 50-26.
