Lady Cougars fall short in tourney

Copper Basin’s Lady Cougars had tough outings on the two final nights of the Piedmont Mountainside Holiday Classic tournament, falling to both Gilmer and Lumpkin counties.

Friday night, December 20, Copper Basin squared off with the Gilmer County Lady Cats in the Fannin County High School gym.

The game saw Alexis Hyatt put up 18 points and Kendra Deal also score in double figures with 13. These efforts wouldn’t be enough as Gilmer County chalked up a 62-47 victory.

Also putting points on the board for Copper Basin were Zoe Green with eight, Kloie Ballew and Addison Hyatt with three each, and Alyvia Harris with two points.

Saturday’s game also proved an uphill battle for the Lady Cougars as Lumpkin County exploded in the second half for a 58-35 win.

Basin fell behind in the first quarter 13-8 at the end of the first eight minutes of play. Deal, Green, Cora Kimsey and Alexis Hyatt each had two points for a balanced Basin attack.

The teams matched their first quarter point outputs in the second quarter, each going 13-8 as Lumpkin’s lead stood at 26-16 at the half.

Hyatt took control in the first quarter for Basin with six points.

In the second half, Copper Basin put 19 points on the board while Lumpkin County poured in 32.

Hyatt led Basin’s scoring with 14 points, the only Lady Cougar to break into double figures. Ballew added eight points followed by Deal with five, Green with four and Kimsey and Harris with two each.

 

Copper Basin falls twice in tournament

The Copper Basin Cougars wrapped up their appearance in the Piedmont Mountainside Christmas Tournament with a 62-25 loss at the hands of the Lumpkin County Indians.

Lumpkin County had pulled ahead 17-10 at the end of the first quarter and built on that lead throughout the contest.

Copper Basin trailed 27-15 at halftime and 46-22 when the end of the third stanza rolled around.

Carder Lance and Talon Smith, Basin’s only two seniors on the team, shared scoring honors with seven points each. Drew Crowder, Dawson Pittman and Carson Parris added three points each while Darrius Harris scored two points.

Copper Basin fell 70-33 to Gilmer County the previous night.
