The Copper Basin Lady Cougars hosted the Tellico Plains Lady Bears Tuesday, January 7, for a district showdown. The Lady Cougars started out strong defensively, but fell to the undefeated Tellico Plains 49-16.
Raegan Higdon led Copper Basin in the first quarter, scoring a two-point bucket. After a strong defensive effort by the Lady Cougars, the Lady Bears was able to score 11 points to lead 11-2.
Laney Jory provided a spark in the second quarter, scoring a two-point bucket and free throw. Hailey Brackett and Skyler Nipper worked the paint to churn out a two-point basket each, while Riley Smith was able to convert a free throw to cap an eight point second quarter for the Lady Cougars.
Tellico scored 19 points in the second quarter to lead 30-10 heading into the half. The Lady Cougars was thrown off by the Lady Bears’ defense in the third quarter, with Brackett scoring the only two points down low. Tellico Plains put up 13 points in the third to take a 43-12 lead.
Jory and Brackett scored a two-point basket each in the fourth to cap the scoring for the Lady Cougars. Tellico put up six points in the fourth as the Lady Cougars fell 49-16.
