Fannin County wrestling looks to build off of successful season

The Fannin County wrestling team is ready to start the 2021-2022 season. With football wrapped up, the Rebels have all their wrestlers back and looking to compete for another state championship.

The wrestling team finished last season, winning the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Traditional Team Wrestling State Championship for Class 2A.

The Rebels also were crowned 2A Area 8 Traditional Champions.

Blake Summers also won the individual state championship, with Corbin Davenport placing as runner up in their divisions.

Fannin County Rebel wrestling coach Chuck Patterson returns as well, and is looking forward to what his guys can do.

Patterson said, “We are really excited for the season. The bulk of our starting lineup from last season’s state title run are returning. We have had a slow start because of yet another awesome football season, and we hope to knock off the rust starting on Black Friday and host NC powerhouse Robbinsville on Wednesday, December 1, at home in the new improved Old Gym.”

Patterson continued, “We are very excited about our returning state champion Blake Summers, state runner-up Corbin Davenport, and other returning state placers Taylor Collis and Matthew Crowder. Additionally, Drake Cantrell, Carson Collis, Logan Long, Colby Shaw, Tristan Siler, Jackson Mercer, Thomas Golden, Christen Newberry and Austin Smith are all returning with varsity wrestling experience.”

The Rebels will also have a few newcomers that are expected to produce this year. Patterson said, “ New up-and-comer Landon Poole will help tremendously as well.  We hope to make another impressive run this season, and now with last year’s success we will get everyone’s best shot. Our kids always respond well to challenges and we expect no different this season.”

The Rebels will host their first home dual Wednesday, December 1, starting with the middle school at 5 p.m., junior varsity at 6 p.m. and varsity starting immediately after.
