Cougars top Hiwassee Dam in three-overtime thriller

The Copper Basin Cougars basketball team hosted the Hiwassee Dam Eagles Friday, January 17. The fans got their money’s worth as the Cougars and Eagles slugged it out in regulation and three periods in overtime, until a victor was decided.

With solid free throw shooting in crunch time, Copper Basin was able to pull out a hard fought 57-50 win over Hiwassee Dam.

The Cougars put up nine points in the first quarter as Evan Bobo sank a long range three ball and Logan Tallent scored a two-point bucket and a free throw.

Chase Mickens got a two-point lay-up to fall and Logan Burkett converted a free throw. Hiwassee Dam was able to churn out 14 points to take a 14-9 lead.

The Cougars battled back in the second quarter, with Tallent scoring seven points on two, three-point baskets and a free throw. Jacob Spurling rattled in a three-point bucket and Austin Collis got a two-point basket to drop.

Nate Deal and Burkett converted a free throw each to cap a 14-point second quarter for Copper Basin. The Eagles tallied 11 points in the second as the Cougars trimmed the lead 25-23 to head into halftime.

Tallent continued his three-point barrage in the third, scoring a long range three-point basket and two free throws. Burkett scored four points on a two-point bucket a a two free throws, followed by a two-point bucket by Spurling and two free throws from Joe Boggs.

The Cougars put up 13 points in the third and held the Eagles to nine as the Cougars took a 36-34 lead headed into the fourth quarter.

Tim Jabaley led the Cougars in the fourth, scoring five points on two, two-point buckets and two free throws.

Boggs played a key part down low, collecting rebounds and scoring three points on a two-point bucket and two free throws. Burkett converted two free throws as well to cap a 10-point fourth quarter for the Cougars.

The Eagles were able to score 12 points in the fourth to tie the game 46-46 to take the game to overtime.

Both teams fought hard, taking the game to three overtimes, but with solid free throw shooting from Copper Basin, the Cougars were able to put out a 57-50 win. Deal played a key role in overtime, converting four free throws. Bobo scored a two-point bucket and converted a free throw, followed by Spurling, who converted two free throws and Boggs who converted two.
