Cougars offense not enough in loss

The Copper Basin Cougar basketball team faced off against Friendship Christian, Sunday, December 29, in the King of the Smokies Christmas Tournament in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

The Cougars came out strong, but fell to the Commanders 51-48.

Copper Basin scored nine points in the first quarter, with Tim Fair scoring a five points on a three ball and two-point basket.

Jacob Spurling nailed a long range three-point bucket and Logan Burkett converted one free throw to cap the scoring for the Cougars.

The Commanders tallied 18 points in the first for a 18-9 lead.

Copper Basin strung together 13 points in the second quarter, as big man Logan Tallent churned out four points on a two-point bucket down low and two free throws.

Burkett scored three points off of a two-point bucket and a free throw. Nate Deal and Evan Bobo scored a two-point bucket each and Chase Mickens converted two free throws.

The Commander scored 13 points in the second quarter to lead the Cougars 37-22 at halftime.

Copper Basin fought back in the third quarter and played great defensively, holding the Commanders to three points. 

Fair erupted for 12 points in the third, scoring two, three-point buckets, two, two-point baskets and two free throws.

Deal and Mickens scored a two-point bucket each to net 16 points in the third quarter to cut the Commanders’ lead 40-38 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Cougars put up 10 points in the fourth quarter, led by Fair who scored four points on two, two-point buckets.

Burkett scored four points on a three ball and a free throw, while Deal converted two free throws. 

Friendship Christian was able to tally 14 points in the final quarter to steal a 51-48 win over the Cougars.
