The Copper Basin Cougars hosted district rival the Sale Creek Panthers Friday, January 24. The Cougars looked to keep their number one spot in the district alive and they did just that, topping Sale Creek 56-36 for a 12-7 overall record and a 4-1 region record.
The Cougars fell behind 12-10 in the first quarter, with Logan Burkett accounting for five points on two, two-point baskets and a free throw.
Timothy Fair scored a three-point basket and Tim Jabaley rattled in a two-point bucket to cap the scoring for the Cougars.
Copper Basin found a rhythm in the second, outscoring Sale Creek 11-6 as senior Nate Deal led the Cougars with five points on a three ball and two-point basket. Burkett bullied his way to two, two-point buckets down low and Collin Limburg rattled in a two-point basket as the Cougars led Sale Creek 21-18 at halftime.
Copper Basin outscored the Panthers 20-10 in the third as Fair erupted for 12 points on two, three point baskets, two, two-point buckets and two free throws. Burkett scored four points on two, two-point buckets and two free throws, while Chase Mickens and Lumburg scored a two-point basket each to give the Cougars a 41-28 lead.
Copper Basin tallied 15 points in the fourth, as Burkett netted six points, Fair scored three points and Jabaley converted two free throws. Logan Tallent and Nate Deal scored a two-point jumper each, sealing the game for the Cougars as they topped the Panthers 56-36.
