Copper Basin overpowers Polk County

Kaitlyn Goode was a force at the plate in Copper Basin’s 17-6 rout of Polk County Monday, April 5. Goode finished the day with two singles, a triple, and a double, for three RBI’s in her four at bats in the game.

Destiny Pittman toed the rubber for the Lady Cougars to start the game, pitching two and two thirds innings, striking out three batters. Goode came on in relief, throwing two and a third innings, sitting down six Lady Cats.

It was a high octane offense right from the start for both teams, as Polk County crossed home plate twice in the top of the first inning to lead 2-0 in what would be the last time Polk County led in the game. The Lady Cougars strung together a nine-run first inning as lead off Riley Smith singled, followed by a Sydney Hickey walk. Smith went on to score off of a Goode single. Smith would score one more time in the bottom of the first inning, while Goode, Sapporiah Ross, courtesy runner Brintlie Beach, Pittman, Channing Beach, Haley Harper and Laney Jory crossed home plate in the first to lead Polk County 9-2.

Copper Basin held the Lady Cats scoreless in the top of the second as the Lady Cougars worked on increasing their lead. Allie Ballew got things started for Copper Basin, crushing a home run to left field. Channing Beach walked and was later knocked home by a big Raegan Higdon double to give the Lady Cougars a commanding 11-2 lead over Polk County to end the second inning.

Polk County found a rhythm in the top of the third, as they crossed home plate three times to shave the Lady Cougar’s lead.

Copper Basins’ offense was hot, however, as Goode and Ross singled to get on base. Both Goode and Ross were knocked home by a big double from Ballew to give the Lady Cougars two runs in the bottom of the third as they led 13-5.

Polk County scored one run in the top of the fourth, and it would be the last time they scored. The Lady Cougars tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fourth with Higdon, Smith, Hickey, and Goode scoring to ultimately put the game out of reach for Polk County as the game was called in the fifth inning in Copper Basin’s favor 17-6.
