Copper Basin Cougar and Lady Cougar Victories

Copper Basin’s Lady Cougars kicked off a winning night for the school’s basketball teams with a victory over the Whitwell Lady Tigers.

Their counterparts on the Cougars would follow with a win of their own Monday, February 3, on the home floor.

Four points each from Kloie Ballew and Alexis Hyatt, and a three pointer from Kendra Deal gave the Lady Cougars an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Copper Basin almost doubled that effort by scoring 20 second quarter points. Hyatt led the effort with seven points and Deal was right behind with five. The Lady Cougars went into the halftime break leading 31-19.

Hyatt took control again in the third period with eight points, followed by Addison Hyatt and Cora Kimsey with four points each. Two free throws from Deal gave Basin 18 points and a 49-30 lead at the buzzer.

Ten fourth quarter points by the Lady Cougars against nine for the visitors left Basin with the 59-39 win.

Alexis Hyatt led Copper Basin with 21 points. Following her, and also in double figures were Deal with 12 and Addison Hyatt with 10 points. Ballew and Cora Kimsey scored six points each while Zoe Green and Riley Akens tossed in two points apiece.

 

Smith scores 30 in Basin victory

The Copper Basin Cougars scored a much needed win last week behind 30 points from Talon Smith and 20 from Carder Lance.

Basin hosted the Whitwell Tigers Monday, February 3, in a battle that came down to the final quarter.

Six points from Smith led Basin’s 17-point output in the first eight minutes, but the visitors held an 18-17 lead at the buzzer.

Whitwell continued to inch forward in the second quarter, going into the locker room ahead 35-32.

A pair of three pointers from Smith, and five points from Dawson Pittman led Basin’s second quarter. Lance began his 20 point game with a pair of free throws.

Ten points from Smith and six from Lance, plus two from Jonah Cearley resulted in 18 third quarter Cougar points. But on the other end of the court, Whitwell put 20 on the board, increasing their lead to 55-50.

Then the Cougars exploded for 24 points in the final eight minutes, 15 from the free throw line. Lance led the overall effort with 12 points, followed by eight from Smith, three from Pittman and one from senior Drew Crowder.

Meanwhile, the Cougar defense held the visitors to 10 points and Copper Basin came off the court with a 74-65 victory.

Following the double digit performances of Smith and Lance were Dawson Pittman with 11 points, Crowder with six, AJ Pero with three points, and Carson Parris and Cearley’s two points.
