Cheatham wins state title, team seventh overall

Braxton Cheatham came away from the Georgia High School Association 1A Division 1 State Track and Field Championships with a first place and a total of four medals.

Overall, the Fannin County High School team placed seventh out of over 50 teams competing at Barron Stadium in Rome May 9 and 10.

Several Rebel athletes finished in the top eight, earning spots on the podium and medals. “They are each considered one of the best athletes in the state in their event(s),” Head Coach Miranda Roof said.

Cheatham placed first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.13, finished sixth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.40, placed sixth in Long Jump with a distance of 21-1.5, and ran the anchor leg of the  4x400 meter relay team in 50 seconds.

Cheatham became the first male track and field athlete in Fannin County High School history to medal in four events at the GHSA State Championships.

The boys 4x400 meter relay team made up of Luke Holsonback, Braden Taylor, Lawson Sullivan, and  Cheatham finished fourth with a personal record time of 3:29.27.

Cohutta Brown placed sixth in Long Jump with a distance of 21-2.5.

Luke Holsonback finished seventh in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.48.

Braden Taylor placed seventh in Pole Vault with a height of 11-0.

Cooper Born finished seventh in Discus with a distance of 141-9.

Two Rebel athletes met Milesplit Standards. Braxton Cheatham met the Milesplit Silver-Level Standard in the 400 meter dash and Cooper Born met Milesplit Bronze-Level Standard in Discus.

Several other athletes competed in the State Championship after earning their spots by performances in Sectional Competition. Isaac Watkins competed in Shot Put and the team of Cohutta Brown, Scott Waldrep, Lawson Sullivan, and Luke Holsonback competed in the 4x100 meter relay.

“All of the coaches are extremely proud of these athletes for all of their hard work, dedication, and commitment this season.  We are also proud of how they showed up physically and mentally ready to compete at the State Championships,” Roof said.
