The Copper Basin Lady Cougars headed into the Region 3 softball tournament with a whole lot of confidence, as the regular season champions, as well as the district tournament champions. The Lady Cougars hosted South Pittsburg Monday, May 13, in the region semi-finals looking to extend their season, but the Lady Pirates had other ideas, knocking off Copper Basin 7-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, with Basin down 3-0, Alexis Hyatt led off with a single but was stranded at first base. In the bottom of the third inning, Riley Akens led off with a double to center field, but the Lady Cougars couldn’t get her home, with South PItt now leading 7-0.
Copper Basin had another chance to get something going in the bottom of the fourth inning when Riley Hall walked and Hyatt reached base on an error by the Lady Pirate second baseman, but they were stranded on second and third base when the inning came to a close.
South Pittsburg’s pitching kept Copper Basin off balance for the rest of the day, and eventually defeated the Lady Cougars 7-0 to advance to the region finals.
Hyatt went 1-3 for Copper Basin and Akens was 1-2 with a double. Hall went 0-2 with a walk. Caitlin Pack went seven innings on the mound, striking out one.
