Bobo set to play in state golf tournament

Copper Basin senior golfer Evan Bobo has done something that has not been done at Copper Basin since the golf program restart in the early 2000’s, when he advanced to the state tournament after a solid finish in the region tournament.

What is even more impressive is that Bobo had not ever picked a golf club up until December, 2020.

When asked why he joined the golf team his senior year, Bobo said, “My friend Cade Bigham talked me into playing.”

Bobo was able to advance to the state golf tournament that is set to be played in Sevierville, Tennessee, October 6 through 8. “It was sort of like a dream, I never thought it could happen to be honest because it is my first year playing. I am very happy,” Bobo said.

To make it to state, Bobo placed fifth in the district tournament, notching an 86 to advance to the regional tournament that was hosted in Bear Trace, located in Chattanooga. In the regional tournament, Bobo tallied an 83, which was enough to punch his ticket to the state tournament.

When asked about some of his memorable moments this year, Bobo said, “Cade hit a shot from about 60 yards out, and it chipped in for birdie. Another memorable moment is at the region tournament I shot one-over-par on the back nine and that was the only way I did as good as I did. I shot 46 on the front nine and 37 on the back nine.”

Bobo said he would not be where he is without the support around him. “My coach Karen Cribbs. Tim Brackett has helped me alot, he has supported me through the whole thing. Tyke Prince has helped me alot with tips on how to get better. My friend Cade (Bigham) encouraged me and pushed me.”

When asked what he likes the most about golf, Bobo said, “I like how you are never out of the game even when you do bad. The first five holes I played awful, but then I ended up doing really well.”
