Copper Basin’s Lady Cougars took on Lookout Valley Tuesday, May 9 in the District 5-A softball tournament, looking to get another shot at Sale Creek in the championship game. The Lady Cougars grabbed the lead early and never trailed, eliminating the Lady Yellow Jackets 6-3 to earn a trip to the title game.
Riley Hall led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and scored on an RBI ground out by Alexis Hyatt giving Copper Basin a quick 1-0 lead. With Destiny Pittman shutting down the Lady Yellow Jacket bats, Copper Basin added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Hyatt singled and scored on a two-run home run to left field by Pittman, pushing the lead to 3-0.
The Lady Jackets trimmed the lead to a single run in the top of the fifth inning, scoring twice to make the score 3-2, but Copper Basin got those two runs right back in the bottom of the inning. Taylee Hall led off the inning with a triple to right field and scored on the throw and Brilee Harris singled and stole second base. After tagging up to third base on a fly ball by Riley Hall, Graves knocked in Harris with a ground out to third base, extending the lead to 5-2.
Copper Basin added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Pittman scored on a bad throw after a single from Kendra Deal, making the score 6-2. Lookout Valley added a run in the top of the seventh inning, but it was too little, too late, as the Lady Cougars advanced to the championship game, winning 6-3 and looking to knock off Sale Creek for the title.
Pittman led the way for Basin, going 1-3 with the home run and two RBI’s. She also pitched seven innings, striking out six Lady Yellow Jackets. Harris went 2-2 for the Lady Cougars, while Riley Hall, Hyatt, Samantha Ware, Deal, and Taylee Hall all had one hit each.
