Basin wins in three at CGLA

The Copper Basin Lady Cougars volleyball team hit the road Tuesday, September 19, to take on Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy. The second match in as many weeks went the same as a week earlier, with Copper Basin defeating CGLA in three sets.

In the opening set, the Lady Cougars won 25-11 and followed that up in the second set with a 25-12 win. Looking for the sweep in straight sets, Copper Basin took the third set by a score of 25-10 to win the match.

Sophomore Riley Akens served up nine aces and fellow sophomore Alexis Hyatt had seven. Other aces came from senior Riley Hall, who had three, sophomore Kendra Deal finished with two, and senior Sarah Collis, senior Nicole Marrie, and junior Zoe Green each had one for a team total of 24 aces. Senior Taylee Hall led the way in kills tonight with five, while Hyatt had four. Sophomore Peyton Grabowski and senior Riley Hall each had three, and Collis had one. Marrie had six assists for the night, followed closely by Deal with five. Riley Hall had two and Green had one.

Assistant Coach Amber Grabowski was happy with the outcome of the game and talked about the versatility and unselfishness of the Lady Cougars. “This team is made up of 12 very talented girls who can all play just about anywhere on the court. Throughout the season every single player has stepped up and contributed in big ways. We are looking forward to celebrating our seniors on Monday and then seeing how things play out in the district tournament”.

Next up for the Lady Cougars was Tennessee Christian Preparatory at home Monday, September 25 for Senior Night, and then they will be on the road at Tellico Plains Tuesday, September 26, for the last regular season game. Sub-districts will be played September 28 and the District tournament begins on October 3.
