CBHS: Lady Cougars capture region title with 56-47 win
Kloie Ballew, Kendra Deal and Zoe Green took charge of the Copper Basin offense to lead the Lady Cougars to a 56-47 region championship win over the Lady Eagles from Van Buren County.
The decision came Wednesday night at Polk County High School.
Ballew and Green each turned in 14-point nights and Deal added ten points.
Copper Basin fell behind 2-0 to start the game, but not long afterwards the Lady Cougars would take the lead and never trail again. Ballew hit the second of two free throws and Green scored from two-point range to put Copper Basin on top 3-2. Cora Kimsey increased the gap to 5-2. When the clock neared the two minute mark, Green hit a free throw to give Copper Basin their biggest lead of the quarter at seven points, 13-6. This did not last long as Van Buren battled back to trail 15-11 at the buzzer.
Ballew and Deal paced the quarter with five points each. Green added three.
Kimsey started the second period with two points to put Copper Basin on top 17-11. Then Green scored twice, once from two-point range and once from beyond the arch to put the Lady Cougars ahead 22-11 at the halftway point in the period.
That’s when Van Buren began fighting back. The next four minutes saw Basin score only four points, the last two coming from Green at the halftime buzzer. Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles tossed in 11 points to close the gap back to four points, where it stood at the end of the first quarter, to trail 26-22.
Green led Copper Basin in the second period with seven points. Kimsey and Addison Hyatt had two points each.
The Lady Eagles continued to fight back in the third stanza, immediately closing the gap to two points at 26-24. A narrow two to four point advantage for Copper Basin continued until the clock neared a minute-and-a-half. That’s when Deal hit a layup, was fouled, and added a free throw for a three point play putting Copper Basin ahead 39-34. Deal followed with two more points and Alexis Hyatt added a bucket at the clock hit 19 seconds, giving Basin a 43-35 advantage at the end of the quarter.
Deal’s five points led Basin’s third stanza, followed by Ballew, Alexis Hyatt, and Green with four each as Copper Basin outscored Van Buren 17-13 in the third, eight minute period.
Ballew hit a two and then a three to open the final eight minutes and put Copper Basin ahead 48-35. After two points from the Lady Eagles, Alexis Hyatt stole the ball and scored a layup to put the Lady Cougars ahead 50-37.
With a little more than three minutes left in the ballgame, Copper Basin took its biggest lead of the night, 54-41, off two points from Green. Alexis would score the last two points of the game.
Besides the trio of Lady Cougars in double digits, Kimsey and Alexis Hyatt both scored eight points, and Addison Hyatt scored two points in the victory.
