Win: Fannin County holds off CB
The second meeting this year between Fannin County’s Lady Rebels and Copper Basin’s Lady Cougars started and ended the same as the first.
But the end at the Fannin County gym Tuesday, December 17, was much closer than fans witnessed on Copper Basin’s home court less than a week earlier.
The first meeting saw a 25 point Fannin victory. Basin cut that winning margin to six points last week.
And just like the first game, the second started the same with an almost point-for-point battle.
The Lady Cougars’ Kloie Ballew put the first two points on the scoreboard from the foul line, and the back and forth was one.
With the score tied at four, Fannin’s Emma Buchanan hit two free throws to give the hosts the lead.
After the Lady Cougars tied the game, Maggie Ledford hit a three-pointer, and the Lady Rebels went up 9-6.
The Lady Rebels allowed only another Ballew free throw during the quarter and stretched their lead to 15-7 when the first eight minutes ended.
Reese Lewis led Fannin County’s scoring with seven of her 19 points on the night.
The Lady Rebels held on to that eight point lead and added another to it as they outscored Copper Basin 13-12 in the second quarter to lead 28-19 at the half.
In the third quarter, Lewis again set the scoring pace as Fannin County outscored the visitors 16-14. Leading the visitors’ attack during the quarter were Alexis Hyatt and Alyvia Harris with four points each.
Early in the fourth quarter, and trailing 47-33, the Lady Cougars went on an 11-2 run led by six points from Hyatt that closed the gap. Basin outscored Fannin 12-7, but it was not enough as the Lady Rebels took the 51-45 win.
As a unit, the Lady Rebels blocked three shots, grabbed 14 steals and collected 31 rebounds. Lewis led the team with 12 rebounds.
Behind Lewis’ 19 points were Emma Buchanan who added seven points, Maggie Ledford and Avi Ethington both scoring six points, Callie Ensley and Izzie Jabaley who added five points each, Albany Cole with two points and Emma Holloway who added a free throw.
Hyatt led Copper Basin’s attack with 11 points followed by Ballew with nine. Kendra Deal added eight points, Cora Kimsey was right behind with seven, Zoe Green tossed in six points and Harris had four.
