Basin beats South Pitt

The Copper Basin Lady Cougars took on South Pittsburg for the second time in a week, and although the rematch was a tough one for a while, Copper Basin used a huge fourth quarter to turn a close game into a blowout Friday, December 16, at Copper Basin High School.

The Lady Cougars got five points from Sapporiah Ross in the opening quarter, while Alexis Hyatt and Zoe Green had a bucket each, as Basin held a one-point lead after a quarter of play, leading 9-8.

Copper Basin increased their lead in the second quarter, outsourcing the Lady Pirates 12-6 as Hyatt heated up, scoring seven points, including a three-pointer. Brilee Harris added another three-ball and Green scored another field goal to lead the Lady Cougars to a 21-14 halftime lead.

The third quarter was a struggle for Basin, as they only made five free throws, but South Pittsburg couldn’t capitalize, only scoring seven points in the period. Green went 3-4 from the line and Ross 2-2, as the Lady Cougars still led at the end of the third quarter by a score of 26-21.

Looking to pull away in the fourth quarter, the Lady Cougars got six points from Hyatt and five more from Kendra Deal to start pulling away from the Lady Pirates. Ross added three more free throws and Harris drilled another three-pointer as Basin did in fact pull away, outscoring South Pitt 17-6 in the final quarter to walk away with the season sweep by a score of 43-27.

Coach Jeff Grimes was pleased with his group, as they’re learning how to win games even when they don’t have their ‘A’ game. “Very proud of our team in battling through an off shooting night by maintaining their intensity on the defensive end. During the course of a long season, if you want to be successful you’ve got to learn to win in different ways.”
