“None of us know how to do anything, but I can tell you the mitochondria is the power house of the cell.”
-Bailey Pettit
Thanks to two Fannin County High School (FCHS) students, their peers are now able to learn valuable life skills through a unique program.
Alexis Hill and Bailey Pettit are leading an Adulting 101 program at FCHS where students can come during the last 30 minutes of the school day to learn skills such as grocery shopping, changing a tire, budgeting, filing taxes and more.
The goal of the program is for students to obtain these life skills in hopes of using them post high school.
When asked how the pair came up with the idea Pettit remarked, “None of us know how to do anything, but I can tell you the mitochondria is the power house of the cell.”
The two are both involved in FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America), and as part of a project for the organization they were asked to “develop and initiate a program in their school or community” said FCHS Family and Consumer Science Teacher Lauren Owenby. The Adulting 101 program is essentially their project.
After the course ends in January, the two will create a portfolio that will be presented at the FCCLA region STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) competition in February.
Owenby said of the two, “I am really proud of their leadership and how they have worked to organize this program, network with community members to lead the sessions and serve FCHS.”
Fannin students are encouraged to participate in the program every Tuesday and Thursday during flex period. How to balance a checking account was the next scheduled topic.
