Copperhill raises rental prices, dumping fees

The City of Copperhill raised the YMCA’s lease and rental prices as well as dumping fees at their sewer plant during a called meeting Monday, January 27.

Long term leases at the YMCA, which include use for classes, rates are currently at $10 per day; however, due to scheduling conflicts, the rate was changed to $12 per session. Each session should not exceed four hours, Monday through Friday only.

The gym is still available to the public for individual use at no cost, however.

Party rentals, which can only occur Saturday and Sunday, were increased from $30 a day to $50 a day. This allows patrons to use their facility from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. If additional time is needed, for example the evening prior to the event, an additional $50 will be required.

In other action, Vice Mayor Ray Tanner and Aldermen Scott Brooks and Tara Akins voted to approve Mayor Kathy Stewart’s proposal to raise the sewer plant’s dumping fee $0.02, from $0.06 to $0.08. Alderman Bill Standridge was absent. Stewart said they currently have two companies, Tows Septic Service and Cherokee Septic Tank, who use their facility, but they need to raise the rates because of “the cost increase of the sewer plant.” This rate is equal to what Gilmer County charges. “I want to stay comparable with Gilmer,” Stewart said.

“With our $245,000 grant (to improve sewers downtown),” Stewart said. “We have to match $109,000, so that means we have to search for a $109,000 grant or loan.” She said a company called Community Unlimited have offered services to help search for an additional grant or loan, but the city must vote to move forward with the company. The proposition passed.

Their next regular meeting is scheduled for Februrary 17 at 5:30 p.m.
