Dr. William “Bill” Whaley, a well-known member of Fannin County’s medical community for many years, has announced his candidacy for Post 4 on the Blue Ridge City Council.
He will appear on the November 2 city General Election ballot.
Whaley has practiced medicine for 55 years, serving in leadership positions, among those as president of the Medical Association of Atlanta.
He is a member of the American College of Physicians, American Society of Hematology, American Society of Internal Medicine, and numerous other professional organizations. He is board-certified in Medical Oncology and four other specialties.
Whaley is credited with bringing comprehensive cancer care to Blue Ridge, Blairsville, and Jasper.
And it is Whaley’s dedication to people and the community that led him to the decision to run for a seat on the Bue Ridge City Council.
He is a long-time supporter of the Mineral Springs Trail in Blue Ridge, he and his wife had given the land for the trail. The trail has grown from an undeveloped wooded area to a destination for residents and visitors alike looking for a peaceful, serene atmosphere.
Whaley has been an anti-vaping speaker at Fannin County High School, was a keynote Veterans Day speaker, and is a strong supporter of local veterans organizations.
He served as a deputy sheriff and advisor to the Zell Miller Mountain Parkway Drug Task Force when it was in effect. He is also a past board member of the Georgia Department of Corrections, past chairman of the Metropolitan Atlanta Crime Commission, and is a senior FFA designated aeromedical examiner and a consultant to the Airline Pilots Association.
Whaley says he “is seeking a second opinion from every resident that is eligible to vote in the City of Blue Ridge. (I am) interested in hearing ideas from everyone about the future of the city.”
