Transport designed to relieve Animal Control problem

Fannin County officials took a big step to control overcrowding at Animal Control last week as they transported 20 dogs total from the Blue Ridge facility to a humane society in Florida.

In the past year, Fannin’s Animal Control has taken in a total of 471 dogs, leaving the facility at full capacity for much of 2022.

A total of 17 dogs being cared for at Animal Control were sent to Florida along with three dogs from Gilmer County, Georgia’s Animal Control on the afternoon of January 26.

After the large transport to Florida, Animal Control now has nine dogs in their care, leaving room for more local homeless dogs.

In order to continue controlling the over crowding, the Fannin County Board of Commissioners voted January 24 to purchase a transport van for Animal Control.

Prior to approval of purchase, only two dogs could be transported at a time.
