Work is almost complete on the Toccoa River Park expansion, the Fannin County Library will not get any more money, and the city ordinance increasing the mayor’s and council members’ salaries is being redone.
McCaysville council members heard from Police Chief Michael Earley at their Tuesday, May 9, meeting that the park work should be completed by this Friday, May 19.
Remaining projects including lighting the flags in the Veterans Memorial Park, some fencing, and painting the Pickle Ball court remain.
Council members commended Earley for his work on the project, Sue Beaver saying, “It would not have been finished without him.”
Mountain Regional Library System Director Heath Lee asked the council to increase the city’s contribution to the library and asked if there were any questions about plans for the new library.
Lee told the council, “Now would be a great time,” to give the library more money.
Mayor Tom Seabolt said, “I don’t feel we can go much above the current level.”
The city currently gives the library $500 a year.
None of the council members asked about the new library.
The city is re-doing its ordinance that raises the mayor’s salary to $800 a month and council members’ salaries to $400 a month. The ordinance approving the increases that go into effect January 2024 was passed at the April council meeting.
However, City Attorney Cortney Stuart explained that because the necessary advertising had not been placed the ordinance had to be redone.
The first reading and public hearing were held during the meeting and the ordinance is set to be adopted at the June council meeting.
City Clerk Nancy Godfrey said she is having good luck collecting back taxes as the result of the letters warning of fifas. The council approved an agreement with Delinquent Tax Services to proceed with tax sales against taxpayers who do not pay their accounts.
