A crosswalk is now in place in McCaysville on Toccoa Avenue/Highway 60 in front of Rolling Thunder River Company, barely more than nine years after a ten-year-old boy was killed there crossing the busy highway.

Police Chief Michael Earley said last week officers are determined to do all they can to make sure such a tragedy does not repeat itself.

The Ellaville, Georgia, youngster had run up the steps from the river and into the path of an eastbound vehicle when he was struck May 20, 2013. He was airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga where he died two days later.

No charges were filed in what the Georgia State Patrol described as, “It was just a tragic accident...It could have happened to anybody.”

Pressure on state leaders resulted in the speed limit being lowered in the immediate area to 25 miles per hour, and the limit was also reduced as Highway 60 continues across the railroad tracks and on toward Mineral Bluff.

A crosswalk was later approved, but has taken years to get in place.

Now, it has been painted and flashing signs warn approaching drivers.

The summer months bring heavy congestion as river tubers gather at the spot on both sides of the highway, preparing for their leisurely rides down the Toccoa River.

Earley warns drivers, “It is in your best interest to slow down in the area. It will be heavily patrolled and the speed limit strictly enforced.” He said officers have been writing citations to drivers going 30 to 40 miles per hour over the speed limit near the crosswalk.

The police chief said summer brings more visitors to McCaysville and speeding drivers create multiple safety hazards. Since Memorial Day, his officers have written approximately 50 citations to speeders.

Fines for speeding, which do not include court costs, range from $100 to $550 in McCaysville. Miles per hour over the speed limit and the fine are:
•11 to 14 - $100;

•15 to 19 - $150;

•20 to 24 - $250;

•25 to 29 - $350;

•30 to 34 - $450; and

•35 to 50 - $550.
