Martha Williams, director of Nutrition & Wellness for the Fannin County School System, has announced that the system is one of eight districts in Georgia to be awarded the Georgia Organics Farm to School Innovation Mini Grant.
The awardees were chosen through a competitive application process that evaluated projects based on their alignment with the outlined priority areas. Those areas included:
●Increase access to local, fresh, organically grown food;
●Include culturally responsive food and education;
●Include organic and/or sustainability focused garden education;
●Increase local food procurement;and/or,
●Benefit Georgia certified organic farmers in other ways.
Projects identified in the grant are located at Fannin County Middle School and Fannin County High School.
Fannin Middle will focus their efforts on expanding vermicomposting.
Fannin High will focus their efforts on vertical gardening and hydroponics and updating an outdoor garden/lab.
